Anila Ashraf
Anila Ashraf is a ceramic artist whose practice explores vulnerability, transformation, and courage through clay. Guided by the philosophy of Latakhaf, "do not be afraid", she creates works that balance technical precision with emotional depth.
Biography
Anila Ashraf began her ceramics practice in 2021, building a distinctive body of work centred on wheel throwing, altered forms, and experimental firing techniques, including Raku and Obvara. Her practice investigates themes of resilience, identity, and the human experience, expressed through collections such as Moon Jars, Unfamiliar Grounds, Rejecting Reality, and We Are Whole. Alongside her studio practice, she is an active educator, having mentored more than 200 students across the UAE through workshops and cultural programmes. Ashraf also fosters artistic exchange by inviting internationally recognised ceramic artists to share innovative techniques, contributing significantly to the region's contemporary ceramics community.
Embedded Whispers
Embedded Whispers presents porcelain vessels pressed into raw, textured slabs of clay. The slabs resemble eroded terrain, while the vessels appear partly uncovered, as if revealed by time.
The contrast between smooth, fragile forms and fractured surfaces speaks to resilience within vulnerability. Rather than erasing the marks of pressure and fracture, the works preserve them, suggesting that strength is not found in perfection but in what endures.
This series invites viewers to consider how objects, like people, carry the traces of their histories, and how silence itself can hold memory.
