Sulafa Mohammed
Sulafa Mohammed is an Emirati textile artist whose practice transforms traditional craft techniques into contemporary sculptural expressions. Through crochet and knitting, she reimagines everyday experiences, translating patterns, numbers, and chance into thoughtful, non-functional forms.
Biography
Sulafa Mohammed (b. 1982, Dubai) is a self-taught Emirati artist who works with crochet and knitting to create sculptural objects using yarn, wire, charcoal, and other unconventional materials. Drawing inspiration from her daily surroundings, she transforms overlooked moments into tactile explorations of memory, process, and form. With a professional background in commerce management, she incorporates numerical systems and chance into her creative methodology, allowing data to shape each sculpture. Her work has been exhibited in the UAE and internationally, including at Tashkeel's Made in Tashkeel 2023, Backhaus Projects, and the Berlin Summer University, reflecting her evolving contribution to contemporary textile art.
Driven by Intuition
Sulafa's creative process is driven by intuition and embraces the unfamiliar - to not fear anything her hands may create. Whilst she is proficient in the various techniques of crochet: the materials, the types of knots, the mathematics behind the forms - a core aspect of her process is her interaction with the material and the instinctive act of not adhering to a predetermined pattern, allowing the material and her movements to guide the outcome.
The meditative mindset of crocheting is an integral part of her practice. As she crochets, the shapes of the knots remain the same throughout the piece, regardless of how many times she produces the knots. However, her environment and her being (her thoughts, actions and moods) are constantly changing, impacting every knot made. Thus, she does not consider crochet a repetitive act - every repetition is unique. This series is a manifestation of the relationship between her mind, hands and creative practice.
